I'm fairly sure I'm going to get a new guitar this summer. I want to start looking already cos there's just so much to take into account and I'd hate to find that after half a year I'm not satisfied with what I got.

Just Darren left to post after me... Here's my effort. It's played at a rather sedate 110bpm so that I could attempt the solo and keep it (fairly) clean. The sweep section is a mess, but I'd half learned it so thought I might as well muck my way through it.

CoB - Bed of Razors - IceBus

I'll be interested to hear comments/criticisms as usual :)

Did you do it yourself or at a shop? And most importantly, have you been satisfied with the results? Thing is, I've quite taken a fancy to a floyd trem. Now that I'm looking at Tokais I'm thinking a Les Paul would be cool, but they supposedly make rather decent strats as well. I'm thinking if I end up getting one of those, putting in a floyd rose might not be a bad idea. Don't know what the pickups are like yet, but those may need changing as well, if that's the way I'm going to go.

Originally it was a Floyd Rose Strat. Made in Mexico, with black body, white scratcheplate, and maple neck. I stripped the bullet proof finish, and stained it navy blue. Made myself a new scratchplate, as i wanted Humbucker/Single/Humbucker. New black knobs; new pickups (Golden age humuckers from Stewmac.com in the USA). I was going to get a black Floyd Rose, and black macine heads, but they're a little pricey.

That's about it really. It took me about six weeks to do, and i'm happy with it's looks. I wish i'd done it Vintage white now, seeing as Fender don't seem to want to Strats that colour anymore.

ICEBUS:

As i said on MSN. Great job. Very clean and tidy.

JEM:

Welcome to the group. I have a guitar named after you.

See :) V

Peter (Icebus) very nice ....nicely played throughout ...It's one tune that I actually thinks sounds cool played slowly ..I enjoyed player it better at lower tempo when learning it than at the full speed.Good job on the solo :D

Now you can use it as an excersize to gradually increase the tempo as You have all the parts down well.

In this period I've leanrt Towards dead end (other than the solo-which will take me a while longer) and am up to about 3/4 speed (190) when fully warmed up but it's gonna take me weeks to get up to full speed which I think is about 218 ..

I'm glad you introduced me to COB ,makes practising sweeping worth it now  as not many other bands really do it in every song !

Hehehe glad you're enjoying it mate... Listening back to yours and DGV's I'm further impressed at how clean you both played it at full speed. I should probably have gone for 125bpm, but I wanted to concentrate on being able to do it properly, not rushing it and making it sound ok at full speed but duff any slower... Roll on the new choice :D

Peter: Nicely played. I've only listened to it on my headphones so I can't comment that much on the tone, since the headphones are a bit dodgy. :? Will have to wait until tomorrow to be able to blast it on full volume. 8) Anyway, as far as I could tell, you had a nice, strong distortion, that was rather clear in that it didn't mumble your articulation up. (´Which happens to me quite a bit) I also thought your midi sounds were cool. I've found mine to be somewhat lacking, but I've yet to find the energy to do something about it. I think this song's worth keeping in the practice routine since it has so many different things going on. And its damn fun to play.

Good work on all parts, to sum it up. Especially I need to tip my hat on the sweeps since I completely chickened out on it after being completely unable to play it. :D You only need some work on it to get it smooth. Also, good work on the solo. It still surprises me how tough it is, since it really doesn't sound all that special when Laiho plays it.

I believe the rota says Wolf is next up. :D Looking forward to your choice, mate. I guess Bigpops will finish his version soon. We can probably already move on to the next while you're still working on finishing this?

I didn't go look at the Tokais today, will get back on the subject once I've tried them out.

Expect a little artistic licence on the second half of the solo.

IceBus: I suggest you check out the mysongbook.com archive, Sixpounder's been recently added there. It seems to be fairly accurately tabbed out. At least the solo seems spot on. I for one will start working on that solo to hopefully have it up to speed in about a year or so.

Jem: It's perfectly alright to do a song "late". I've been thinking of doing some that I originally missed. So if you like the song, you can always do it.

As DGV says Jem you can do whatever songs we,ve already done ..so if you say finish a song you could go back over some of the others and record them :) As you already know Razors you might be able to get something down when you've got a bit of spare time ..I'd love to hear it :)

I'll wait for Darren to post then put my choice up  I've uploaded the mp3 this morning for it incase you cant find it !

Cheers DGV, I'll download that now. I'll look forward to hearing what you've picked Wolf :D

Jem - don't be fooled, this song really isn't as easy as I thought it was going to be when I picked it... ;)

Maybe where you are. There are 6 hours 45 minutes to midnight here. As soon my brothers girlfriend wakes up, i'll get it done.

It should only take me about half an hour. It would be done already, but i've been out.

Post your's now if you like Wolf, i'll just throw mine in this thread later.

Bed of Razors

Here it is, finally. It's all Epi Les Paul bar the solo.

Enjoy, or not, as the case may be.

Very very nice man. Exactly how I wish I could play CoB stuff. You bluffed the solo extremely well, and I loved the little mirrored bit of what the keyboard did on the descending lick.

Absolutely top notch.

Very Nice Darren ....I thought your improvised solo sounded pretty cool ...Nice and cleanly played throughtout..Are they standard pups in the epi cos if they are it proves how much of your Sound is your GT6 ( I found it interesting listening to it)

I love the clarity you get when mxing ,I'm sure it,s my PC/soundcard showing its age tbo :S

They are stock pups, yes Wolf. I think you're right about the GT6. Dirty sounds disguise the guitar quite a bit.

I wouldn't blame your soundcard. All my recording before February this year were done on an SBLive! Platinum. Your Audigy should easily cope.

Well, it was great, something we've definitely come to expect from you. :D The ending of the solo was nice, rather close to the original, nothing as drastic as I was half expecting. Nice work throughout. Sounded clean and effortless.

Yeah I think it just sounds a bit Fuzzy compared to say your Jem or PRS but interesting none the less...I loved the bent note at the start nice vibrato (meant to say that) sounded cool.

Yeah your probably right about my SC I reckon it might be my old PC(low amount of ram etc) ,or perhaps just the software I use....I found when I could get Cubasis to work things always sounded clearer but I like N-track cos it's idiot (Wolf) proof :D

Actually, Wolf, I half blame the V-Amp2. I have the same problem that even though I can get some rather nice sounds out of it, it tends to give a rather mumbly sound. I've found it very hard to get good clarity out of it.

It can't compete with the GT6, but then it is in a completely different price range.

All that said, I'm still satisfied with my VAmp2.

I think you are right about the V-amp2 a bit DGV as I borrowed a POD 2 from a friend and it sounded so much clearer with far more output before it distorted ..I think the POD XT & GT6 are in a bit of a league of there own ...

But like you say for the price (and it was all I could afford) I think the V-amp2 has some fairly decent sounds....There is a sweet spot with it ,but it,s a very narrow area and 9 times out of 10 I dont quite get it :S

One of the things about the VAmp is that it gives a wide range of different sounds, as it emulates so many different amp types. One of the problems is that every time you change that, you need to start looking over again for that sweet spot, and it really takes quite a bit. So I'm rather lazy about that, really. I've never been a perfectionist about my tone. I try to find something that sounds nice and somewhat resembles the original. I seldom bother going through the task of trying to perfect the tone, since I'll be trying something different soon and then I'll have lost my settings anyway. I guess what I should do is work out a tone that I like, and completely disregard what the original sounds like and just go with the same settings day in day out. The VAmp still offers plenty of bang for the buck.

Oh, incidentally. One of the all-time best selling Finnish bands has made a new record after a long break. I just saw their newest video for the first time today, and was in shock and awe to notice that their guitarrist was playing a Tokai telecaster. :o They must be at least semi-decent, I guess.
