Suggestions for a camera
Girlfriend's sister's 21st b/day soon. Apparently she wants a conventional camera, and we have a budget of only around £50. Any idea of a good (least bad?) one at that price. After best picture quality, so things like APS and zoom aren't necessary as they'll add to price.

Well personal opinion is that if you're after best picture quality then you should stay away from APS fullstop.
You can pick up APS cameras cheap nowadays but I think the quality on them is awful.

hanohtep is saying is that the material world doesn't work that way

Agree with Hano, stay away from APS. I'm a big fan of Canon's EOS range, but you're starting at around £200 there.
Have a look at john lewis' range. Can't see them being anything but reasonably good.

Does she want manual control, does she want to experiment and learn about the camera, and get into photography, or just to record events, holidays ect?
Any 35mm compact is capable of taking good pictures, with a budget of £50 it might be worth trying to find one that has a decent lense, compare the manufacturers and maximum apertures (lower is better!). I don't know if you can get one of these with aperture priority mode, but if you can, that's good. These things have the advantage of being absoluetely take anywhere, and can lead to some interesting oh-so-lomo shots. (Plus, if you do get a zoom, look for one capable of 28mm wide angle, this is usually more important than a big telephoto)
The problem, if she is intersted in photography is their lack of any manual control - focus, exposure or aperture, and of course interchangeable lenses, filters, tripod mounts, flash hotshoes. If this is the case, that you'd have to search around for an old manual SLR. Although it's unlikely you'd find anything within your budget, with a lense.
