Tree movement
Now that I have a house with a garden and it is coming up to the summer, I need to move a willow tree.
Is there anything I need to be careful about doing with the roots etc while I move it? Also is it really worth the effort or will it die regardless of what I do?

How big is the tree? So long as you dig clear enough of the rootball and carry the whole caboodle over to the new location, and then water it very well and frequently when it's in, it should survive fairly well. It might get stunted by a few months but if it suits the new position then no probs. Definitely keep the soil though - it's what it's used to, likes, and relies on.

I would disagree with that, and it looks like The University of Sasketchewan do a little too. (move willows in Spring)

I am all for chopping it down and burning it, and then decking the back garden and concreting the front, negating the need for gardening and lawn mowers, but for some reason I can't convince vagueone of the beauty of this scheme...
I say we move it and risk it - it's a massive spider hang out and that I don't like!

One little thing to remember is that the roots are 3 times the height of the tree, so you would need to make sure that you moved enough of the root ball to enable it to survive in the new location.
Easiest thing would be to hook it out, chop it up and use the branches as supports for other plants in the garden and plant a new sapling where you were going to move the old tree too.
